The premier students beginning our diploma programmes are by default oriented towards a scientific series of subjects -- although they may opt for an economics & social series instead -- when they choose one subject from each of five fields (mathematics, natural sciences, a main language of instruction (for us this is always English), an additional modern language (we plan to offer Chinese and Arabic first), and a social humanities subject. They must next choose a special option, either another science such as physics, a third modern language, or another social study. Three or four of these subjects are taken at advanced level; the others are those of our standard programme. These subjects vary in the number of weekly periods during which instruction is offered: for example, in Gymnasial Fifth, when the pupils are of 11th grade age but are studying subjects at a college level, a default programme of studies will include the following number of weekly 45-minute periods:
Further Mathematics 8
Pre-university Chemistry 6
Advanced Physics 4
Advanced Literature 4
World History 4
Chinese 3
Ethical Philosophy 3
Physical Activity 2
In addition to the above programme of studies, Multidisciplinary Sciences and Arts (including literature), the others we plan to offer are Social Science, Literature & Communications, and Health Sciences. Advanced placement level subjects we hope to offer within these programmes include mathematics, chemistry, physics, literature, history, economics, Chinese, philosophy, biology, and Arabic.
