The Fifth Year English module takes the pupils through units of enquiry on harnessing & transforming energy, embracing the
unknown, telling our stories, solving problems through technological innovation, having an impact
on the world, and overcoming challenges. The skills and knowledge captured in our English as first teaching language
standards (Common Core State Standards), to be achieved in keeping with the English state curricular framework (see especially the bottom of page 43) as specified by Singapore's 2020 English language syllabus (see especially "21st Century Competencies", on page 6), are
designed to prepare pupils for life outside the classroom. They
include critical thinking skills and the ability to closely and
attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy
complex works of literature. Fifth Year pupils will also concentrate on
informational, persuasive, and narrative writing.
Mathematics
In Fifth Year, pupils will focus intensively on these four critical areas: (1) deepening their understanding of numbers & algebra, including percentages and the correspondence between two quantities and the aspect of variation in the relationships expressed by a simple algebraic expression; (2) extending their understanding of space & shapes, including measurements of area and volume, the congruence of figures such as regular polygons, prisms, and cylinders, and the ratio of the circumference of a circle and its diameter; (3) extending their understanding of data & probability, including representing data by using pie graphs and band graphs; and (4) incorporating integrated applications of the above content into our units of enquiry.
Science
Our Fifth Year science module takes pupils
into enquiry about space, natural resources, and matter. It will help pupils formulate answers to questions such as the following:
When matter changes, does its weight change?
Can new substances be created by combining other substances?
How does matter cycle through ecosystems?
Where does the energy in food come from and what is it used for?
How
do lengths and directions of shadows or relative lengths of day and
night change from day to day, and how does the appearance of some stars
change in different seasons?
How much water can be found in different places on Earth?
How much water can be found in different places on Earth?
Modern languages
One World's benchmarks have been designed to reflect the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages skills set (reading, writing, speaking &
listening). In Fifth Year, Chinese and Arabic Language Acquisition are to be offered at levels ranging from mother tongue level to the equivalent of A1, A2, and B1 acquisition on the CEFRL.
Social humanities
Fifth Year social studies of the living environment will take pupils through a full year of investigation of the United States, the local society in which they live. They will explore its democratic institutions, the rights & responsibilities of its citizens, and the regions, issues, and events that have shaped this country. Pupils will learn, during our humanities units of enquiry, to discover the resources & identity of regions of the United States, the American dream, group legacies in the United States, and water -- the scarce resource in this planet's living environment.
Other subjects
As in other years of our primary school, the focus is to be on the English language, mathematics, and the acquisition of a first additional modern language, but arts, music, physical education, moral education, and creative, integrated, experiential studies are also important -- as are social, cultural, & games learning activities, where mixed nationalities meet.
